Taking safety for granted low maintenance costs and high availability of vehicles are top priority issues of fleet management in railway operations. By integrating advanced diagnostics into the brake systems of modern vehicle concepts both cost and time consumption for maintenance in-line with higher availability of vehicles can be achieved. To realise this target modern concepts for brake system architecture, data processing and analysis including sensorisation in all areas of the vehicle but especially of the brake components have to be employed. Telediagnostic features have to be added to distribute the information from the moving vehicle to a home base for deep analysis and planning of the work flow in the maintenance work shop. Further to the management of new fleets the analysis of existing vehicles can be supported to elaborate and establish an optimised condition based maintenance. The paper will highlight concepts and related hardware components including software algorithms available. These will be underlined by examples successfully operating in different types of vehicle such as locomotives, coaches, and EMU/DMU.
