Polymorphismand the taxonomic status of theHebe amplexicauliscomplex (Scrophulariaceae)

The leaf and stem pubescence which distinguishesHebe allaniifromH. amplexicaulisis shown to be a genetic polymorphism with hairy dominant to glabrous; consequentlyH. allaniiis here treated asH. amplexicaulisformahirtaGarnock-Jones et Molloy. Within-population variation in several other characters is discordant and does not justify the recognition of other infraspecific taxa. Lowland populations in The Hunters Hills area and in the gorge of the Opihi River are morphologically distinguishable fromH. amplexicaulisand are recognised as a new species,H. pareoraGarnock-Jones et Molloy. The habitats ofH. amplexicaulisandH. pareoraare described and the conservation of both species in nature is discussed.
