Gaming on the PC has been losing market share to its console-based cousins for years. A recent report from the Yankee Group found that although gaming in general generated $20.35 billion of revenue in 2007, the PC sector-unlike console and software-dropped from $1.5 billion in 2002 to $911 million last year. Thanks to advancements in Internet technology, however, there is a resurgence in PC gaming. According to the Yankee Group, online games had revenue of $1.6 billion in North America last year, and that number could grow to $3.89 billion by 2012, accounting for 83 percent of gaming revenue on the PC.
