SummaryFour of the most important dietary items ofColobus angolensisin Kenya were tested for the presence of secondary compounds. Phytochemical screening tests found tannins, saponins and alkaloids to be present. Current theories concerning the relationship between social structure and resource availability for herbivorous primates are discussed. It is proposed that the presence of secondary compounds in the diets of primates may be more ubiquitous than previously assumed and adaptive behavioural patterns more individualized for geographical localities and species.RÉSUMEÉQuatre de plus importants éléments du régime du Colobus angolensis au Kenya sont analysés pour déceler la présence de composés secondaires.
