A recent report finds that U.S. radiation exposure regulations may be inadequate for women and children because they are based on "Reference Man," a hypothetical 20- to 30-year-old white male.The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other federal agencies still use Reference Man in radiation dose regulations and compliance assessment, despite evidence that the practice fails to protect many groups adequately, according to Arjun Makhijani, PhD, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER).
