The effects of As, Cd, and Ni on the growth and nitrogenase activity in the cyanobacteriumAnabaena cylindricawere studied. Cultures were incubated at 24 #xB1; 1 #xB0;C under continuous illumination for three weeks. Metals were used in combinations of two, as well as individually. Growth measurements were made spectrophotometrically at 600 nm. Nitrogenase activity was determined through the acetylene reduction method using a gas chromatograph. It was found that Ni, at a concentration of 5 ppm was both growth and nitrogenase activity inhibitive, although, with the introduction of 0.1 Cd and 500 ppm As, growth and nitrogenase activity were observed.
