VALUE-ADDED FISHERY PRODUCTS: Japanese market imported more ready-meals and other prepared and semi-prepared seafoods in 2006; supplies from foreign sources rose by 15% last year against 2005. FROZEN FISH: Argentina; Argentinean fishery exports in 2006 have surpassed the US 1030 million dollar mark recorded in 1997. Brazil; Currently experiencing low landings while demand from domestic and export markets are strong. CHILLED AND FROZEN TUNA: Japan: Reduced tuna catches and the rising market prices resulted in lower imports inquantity but higher in value during 2006. Nonetheless, supplies of tuna loins and fillets increased every year from imported sources. At present the sashimi market is lull with lower supply and weak demand which may persist till the Spring season. American Samoa: Canneries are forced to bring in expensive raw materials due to reduced catches and subsequent low direct supplies from purse seiners. JAPANESE SHRIMP MARKET: Total imports of shrimp increased marginally in 2006 with better demand for preparedand cooked shrimp. Domestic market is steady with firm prices but imports are slow due to the yen depreciation. US SHRIMP MARKET: With colder winter throughout the mid and eastern USA, shrimp consumption remains low and inventories are more than enough. However, demand for black tiger shrimp is good at present but not so for the vannamei. Last year shrimp imports increased by 11.6% to a record level of 590 299 MT.
