VALUE-ADDED FISHERY PRODUCTS: Japan: With increasing domestic demand for convenience seafood, market continues to import more value-added products. The popular species are shrimp, crab, squid and cuttlefish. EU: The use of tuna loins as raw material has became a reality for the EU tuna canning industry. This has made the region a major market for tuna loins, particularly the cooked loins. FROZEN FISH: Chile; The ban on hake fishing is in force from 15 August to 20 September, Artisanal fishermen are not too happy about it. USA: Imports of frozen fish blocks have declined in June 2006 by 15% in quantity compared to the same month last year Cumulative imports meanwhile fell by 19% to 25 968 MT. CHILLED AND FROZEN TUNA: Japan: Trading is slow in the sashimi market. Supplies of fresh tuna are also low from most of the sources. Demand for frozen yellowfin has increased in the wholesale market as bigeye supplies get regulated. JAPANESE SHRIMP MARKET: This week the yen has weakened further making imports and domestic trading difficult. However, supplies are moderate to low in Japan and also in producing countries. Trading should improve by early October and afirm market is in the forecast. Imports of higher value/processed shrimp increased during January-June this year. US SHRIMP MARKET: Imports increased by 15.5% during January-June and domestic supplies are higher than usual. With no real boost in summerdemand, present shrimp supply in the USA is considered burdensome. Market prices may weaken for both local and foreign shrimp, especially for the white variety.
