This study is aimed at finding independent measures to describethe dimensions of urban driving patterns and to investigate whichproperties have main effect on emissions and fuel-use. 62 drivingpattern parameters were calculated for each of 19 230 drivingpatterns collected in real traffic. These included traditionaldriving pattern parameters of speed and acceleration and newparameters of engine speed and gear-changing behaviour. By usingfactorial analysis the initial 62 parameters were reduced to 16 inde-pendent driving pattern factors.
