LJ reports on a colourful and unconventional lighting scheme in West London, designed for both its aesthetic and anti-crime effects. The elevated A40(M) motorway (or the Westway as it is locally known), built in the late 1960s on the US 'freeway' model, slices through the mixed West London communities of Paddington, Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove. The area beneath the road has longbeen blighted by dereliction and crime, although in recent years there have been some imaginative adaptations of the space beneath its concrete stilts for offices, sports centres, workshops, studios and playgrounds.
