The upper 10ensp;cm of surface soil and litter beneath a coniferous forest in coastal British Columbia was found to contain over 1000 viable seeds per square meter.Alnus rubraBong. made up 68.9 of all viable seed, although 18 other species, mainly weedy and secondary types, were recorded.
