This article addresses radio delivery of broadband telecommunications services for the 'last mile', providing the final connection from the operator to the customer. The historical background of broadband wireless access (BWA) development is presented, and the potential technology choices for deployment are introduced. The WiMAX interoperability initiative is outlined, including some information on early trials. An examination is made of the current spectrum opportunities in this field in the UK, showing the future path for BWA.
