When Grant County Public Utility District cut its operations and maintenance workforce by 10 percent in the mid-1990s, it needed a way to prioritize maintenance efforts. The answer? A custom computerized reliability-centered maintenance system that improves staff efficiency and plant reliability. A downsizing in the mid-1990s decreased the operations and maintenance staff at Grant County Public Utility District by 10 percent. This decision to streamline staffing at the utility's four hydro projects also forced management to closely examine its priorities for operations and maintenance. To determine how to make the best use of staff, the hydro division initiated a work process review in 1996. The result: a move toward reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), which lets Grant County PUD improve equipment reliability and unit availability and focus its limited resources on essential equipment.
