Miguel Mota was born in Lisbon on October 15, 1922．He completed his degree in Agronomy ('Engenheiro Agronomo') from the School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, in 1948, with a specialization in Plant Genetics．Early on he developed a keen interest in microscopy, soon becoming the Head of the Dept．of Cytogenetics in the 'Esta??o de Melhoramento de Plantas' (National Plant Breeding Station) in Elvas, Portugal, followred by a position in the Dept．of Genetics of the 'Esta??o Agronómica Nacional' (EAN) (National Agricultural Research Station) , initially in Sacavem and from 1961 in Oeiras (both near Lisbon) where he became Dept．Head in 1966．
