Upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., is an important crop that is grown in warmer climates throughout the world. Two important products are derived from the cotton plant: fiber and seed. Spinnable fibers arc used by the textile industry to produce yarns and fabrics. Seeds are processed into oil, meal and hulls, which in turn are used in food items, culinary purposes, and livestock feed and other products. In the United States whole seeds are particularly important to the dairy industry as a source of high protein feed.
