Synthesis of new reagents for the fluorescence derivatisation of thiols and alcohols

The synthesis of two selective thiol derivatisation reagents (3, 4b) is described, starting from readily available 2-(4-aminophenyl)-6-methyl-benzothiazole (1). The isocyanate6, being a known alcohol derivatisation reagent, is obtained from1in a two step synthesis, in which the usual isocyanate synthesis using phosgen is avoided.
