This column is aimed at the unknown. Stuff we can only dream about. It is, for all practical purposes, a wish list of technology that someone should bring to market. Perhaps it will be so, but I do not know. So here goes, my metal-stamping-technology wishes. Why couldn't someone invent a small DC electrical generator that could be mounted in an automatic progressive die to power electronic sensors? After all, the up and down motion of the die could cause a moving component, say a magnet, to induce electrical energy in a coil that then would be used to power the sensors. I wrote and spoke about this many years ago and have been waiting for someone to invent such a device. Perhaps some of the electronic-sensor manufacturers or die-protection-controls manufacturers could devote some research and development to this concept and bring it to fruition? Perhaps they already have and it is just a matter of time until they go public with it.
