Anhydrous and hydrated (190 proof) ethanol were used as fuels for a DDC two-cycle, DI, CI engineto evaluate performance and durability effects. The engine suffered no ill effects except for injectorneedle sticking, which caused a reduction in combustion efficiency and power A catalytic converterwas very effective in reducing HC and CO emissions from the engine. The water in the hydratedethanol helped to reduce NO{sub}x, HC, and CO emissions. Replacing the injectors at the end of a454-h test eliminated the injector sticking and restored engine power.
