A semantic differential of 25 items was used to assess change in acceptance by MR personnel of sexual expression in the mentally retarded. The instrument was administered to 292 participants in a 3 day workshop format in 5 states of the Southeast. There was a significant change in acceptance from pre to post workshop in all groups except one. Control group and six months follow-up administrations also occurred. An item analysis of high and low acceptance persons pre and post test revealed particular behaviors or medical decisions to be more acceptable to certain personnel. The data suggest that the workshop was effective in increasing the acceptance of mentally retarded individuals expressing themselves sexually.
