To study the behaviour of unreinforced masonry constructions under seismic loadings, extensive numerical and experimental investigations have been carried out at the TU Munich. They focused on representative materials and types of construction in Germany considering characteristics of the seismic loadings in regions of low seismicity. Using the test method of pseudo-dynamics, the coupling of impact and reaction of the structure led to realistic conditions. Tests were carried out just on the relevant shear wall section in the first story. The upper stories with the walls and the elastic restraint in the concrete slabs were considered numerically as a sub-structure. Its stiffness characteristics - described by nonlinear springs - were determined within preceding static-cyclic tests. For a better understanding numerical calculations using nonlinear macro- and micro-models have been carried out. Generally a good match between calculation and experimental results was shown.
