US resin producers Cargill and Dow Polymers claim to be able to produce polymers, on a commercial scale, that are derived from maize. The joint venture has produced a family of polyactide (PLA) resins that can be made from plant material, a renewable resource. PLAs can also be used as a precursor for fibers.Early applications include packaging film and textile fibers. In both cases existing production equipment can be employed. Several companies such as Autobar Group, BIMO Italia, Cascades, Constantia, Tetrapak and Trespaphan have announced plans to develop PLA-based products. Cargill Dow says PLA film is a good barrier to food aromas and flavours, and can form a low temperature heat seal. It can be extruded and has inherent polarity - useful in printing and metallising. It is also compatible with waste management processes.
