The complexity in the font shape and its contextual dependence are two major problems, in the generation of computer output in Indian languages. Even with a processor-based printer using dot-matrix technology, in the case of impact printing, the problem of vertically-large-sized character remains. We, propose in this paper, a cost- effective solution for obtaining rather large number of copies (through cyclostyling) as is normally required for circulation in offices. Thus, this system is to support office automation in the Indian context rather than as a regular hard-copy unit. It is based on using a commercially-available electronic stencil cutter, which is widely used in many offices these days. With this, a dot size of even as small as 0.15 mm, can be achieved. An Intel 8748-based controller for the interface and associated electronic circuitry adds the required extra features to the normal functions of the stencil cutter. The output from this stencil cutter is better than those obtainable with mechanical typewriter or other improvised arrangements using matrix printers. The system is so designed that the stencil cutter can still be used in its normal mode thereby providing a very cost-effective stencil output from a computer.
