I am most grateful to my colleagues, Dr. Nahama Broner, Brian Dates, and Dr. M. Scott Young for their input and direction on this issue of the journal. As guest editors, they did an outstanding job gathering together a stellar group of authors. As this collection of articles illustrates, the breadth of material is impressive. The downward spiral that occurs when abuse of substances among adults co-occurs with mental illness is a growing public health problem that manifests itself in homelessness. The extent of dual diagnosis in the homeless population is staggering.
