One of the most dangerous operations the fire service performs is using elevators during a building fire. Elevators provide the third most common means of transport for firefighters, after apparatus and stairs. Our history is full of incidents where firefighters have been killed, seriously burned, or injured while using elevators during a fire. The many editions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) A17.1, Safety Code for Elevators (Firefighter's Emergency Operations), and local modifications to it impact firefighters' trip to the upper floors. Different generations of Firefighter's Emergency Operations will be found in buildings in your response districts, including some buildings built before the introduction of ASME A17.1 (Fireman's Service) in the 1970s, which may have none of the protection you may be used to.
