This paper discusses the generalized evaluation of the quality of a black-and-white image, based on the intensity of the perception of its main parameters: contrast, average brightness, and additive noise. The hierarchy-analysis method is used to carry out a comparative analysis of the theoretical and subjective evaluations of the image quality. It is shown that, for high-quality images, the main factor that affects tile quality of the subjective perception of the quality is the presence of noise in the image. However, the role of image contrast substantially increases as the image quality deteriorates. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.
