We have developed a network management database and a network performance diagnosis system in order to construct an information base for establishing network life cycle and to diagnose network performance. The main features of this system are (1) integrating the network management information and network design information by using the database and (2) helping to judge the network condition by showing the series of performance measurement data in accordance with network topology. The system was applied to manage the performance of a network with about 5,000 routers. The experimental results on this network showed that it was possible to reduce the amount of work for the performance management from 20 man-days to 1 or 2 man-days. Consequently we are continuously able to check the condition of large-scale network every day.
