Software serves as an integral, yet often unseen component of our lives. It lives in nearly every device we touch from electronic coffee makers, calculators, cars, circuit boards of various types, and most commonly recognized computers. Software allows us to e-mail colleagues and associates globally, complete school work, browse the vast resources of cyberspace, edit multimedia, and perform a variety of other functions. Though it has been a vital part of our lives, its development in terms of technological advancements has not been merely as impressive as the hardware on which it runs and that is why as we progress into what Derek Leebart deemed the 'Knowledge Era' in his book The Future of Software, we look towards software to hold the greatest advancements of our future.
