US primary aluminium production was steady in May from a year earlier after months of trending below 2016 production volume. The two remaining domestic smelters Alcoa and Century Aluminum produced a combined 64,000t in May, flat from a year earlier, according the US Geological Survey. Still, year-to-date May output was off by 25pc from a year earlier on declines between January and April. The discrepancy comes mostly from the closure of Noranda Aluminum's New Madrid, Missouri, smelter which contributed to US output until it was shuttered in March 2016.
