The Institute for Transport Studies' group rhission is to advance the understanding of transport systems throughout the world, by research and teaching activities which develop the necessary skills and best practice in the planning, design, operation and use of transport systems. The last year has seen research results which maintain ITS at the forefront of new knowledge and understanding. For example, a study of the benefits and costs of implementing a system of intelligent speed limits has shown that limiting the top speed, not just to the legal speed limit but also in accordance with prevailing road and weather conditions, would reduce injury accidents in Britain by 35 per cent. The prediction on accident savings is based on an analysis of the relationship between speed and accidents of various types and of a forecast of how the new system would alter vehicle speeds, particularly those of the fastest drivers. This ongoing project is funded by the Vehicle Standards and Engineering Division of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and is in collaboration with the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA).
