NA;Several dyes used in radiologic research or clinical work were shown to stop the spontaneous contractile activity of lymphatic vessels and veins in the bat wing following their topical application at low concentration. Methylene blue, for instance, stopped these contractions at a concentration of 0.06 mM. Topical application of radiographic contrast materials is known to have the same effects but a 1,000 times higher molar concentration is required of contrast materials to produce these effects. It is suggested that contrast materials stop the spontaneous contractions of veins and lymphatic vessels chiefly through their osmotic properties while the dyes do it through other mechanisms of pharmacologic action.
