With mobile phones poised to outnumber wired phones in many areas, carriers have the opportunity to enhance their revenues by delivering high-value business and personal services though mobile handsets. This article discusses the challenges and potential solutions for several key problems in doing so including delivering complex services to mobile customers, delivering services through a variety of access networks, and delivering consistent services to users using a variety of devices. Solutions which have been proposed and are discussed in the article include the use of IN, IP telephony, and the 3GPP IMS architecture. The conclusion is that the challenges can be met and that there is a significant opportunity for service providers to move beyond simply providing connectivity (minutes) and realise the potential for both new revenue and customer retention by delivering valuable business and personal services.
