AbstractSamples of pure iron and of 18 pure binary alloys containing a nominal 0.1 or 0.5 wt. of substitutional alloying element have been oxidised in air at 830 and 930 °C. The effects of the alloying element on the reactions at the scalemetal interface have been studied metallographically and by X‐ray and electron microanalysis. Measurements have also been made of the ambient temperature adherence of the scales so formed. Similar observations have been made on a range of iron‐carbon al
