Usage of advanced materials is progressing not only in construction and the machine industry but also in electronics, automatics, and as biomaterials. All these new advanced materials demand special technologies and wide spectra of their properties examination methods. Reflecting this tendency, 17 years ago the European Materials Research Society was founded. The main aim of E-MRS activity is the transfer of actual scientific achievements to industry. At first its activity was concentrated in European Union countries. Since then it has spread throughout Europe. E-MRS is a member of International Union of Material Research Societies (IUMRS) with headquarters in Pittsburgh, USA, which gathers similar organizations from Japan, China, Australia and many more. These institutions organize symposia, conferences, and training as well as publishing journals and books and support several research methods and new technologies transfer into the industry of their area.At the moment E-MRS membership numbers approximately 5000 people, Among many E-MRS conferences the most important is 'The E-MRS Spring Meeting' organized every year in June in Strasbourg, France. In 2000 it was co-organized with the 'International Conference on Electronic Materials'. It has approximately 1500 participants divided in 18 specialized symposia. These meetings are usually a unique opportunity for organizing new co-operation networks and research projects in many kinds of materials science. The growing number of participants from Central Europe countries is a noticeable feature of recent meetings, but this still does not fully reflect the great research potential hidden in laboratories in that part of Europe.
