Despite a pervasive anti-smoking campaign, German smokers do not seem very affected. Domestic cigarette consumption was up nearly 2 in 1996, totaling about 136 billion units. Of this volume, cheap dealers' own brands accounted for 6 billion units, an increase of 13 compared to the previous year. The upward trend in sales has been confirmed by cigarette deliveries of the industry to the trade in the first quarter of 1997. Deliveries rose 1.3 compared to the first three months of 1996.
