In the increasingly monolithic exercise of housing, architects, at least those worthy of the name, have become marginalised. The history is well known: social housing is stigmatised; it is recognisable by its 'Modern' architecture; and therefore Modern architecture is stigmatised. Conversely, the story goes, non-modern, ie mock period architecture, the clothing of private housing, is acceptable, as confirmed by the market.
