Groin pain is a problem among athletes. One of the principal problems is the difficulty in establishing a correct diagnosis. Acute injuries are less common than chronic injuries, which are often caused by overuse. Many athletes with groin pain may have more than one disease entity. The differential diagnoses that have to be considered include muscle or tendon injuries (to the adductor muscles: m. rectus femoris. m. rectus abdominis; and to the hamstring muscles, m. iliopsoas and m. sartorius), as well as stress fractures (to the femoral neck or to the ramus inferior or ramus superior os pubis), bursitis, symphysitis, osteitis, and periostitis. Referred pain from diseases in the spine, abdominal viscera, prostate and hernias may also be seen. To establish the correct diagnosis, a multidisciplinary approach is often necessary. The use of radiography, magnetic resonance, and ultrasound has proved valuable in the diagnosis of musculosketetal diseases of the pelvis and groin area.
