Rumble strips encourage highway safety. Now that urban sprawl and suburban encroachment has resulted in rush hour commutes that extend in many locations from 3:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the problem of driver fatigue and drowsiness is increasing. And with increased use of cell phones and drivers reaching for things such as cassette tapes or CDs, toll tickets, cigarettes, etc., driver inattention is also a concern.
