The German Railway Company - DB AG - implements a digital mobiletelecommunication network based on the GSM-R standard, an improvementto the public GSM standard developed to the specific needs ofoperating railway systems .Due to higher quality ,more functionalityand lesser costs of operation the GSM-R network will replace thedifferent analogue mobile telecommunication systems that are now inuse by the DB AG. Train radio, shunting radio and the European TrainControl System(ETCS) level 4 are currently the most importantapplications that will operate on the GSM-R network. Furthercustomer-oriented radio applications ,an increase in interoperabilitywith neighbouring European railways and the possibility of furtherdevelopment of the open GSM-R-standard guarantee the future potentialof the GSM-R-system.
