For our basic budget system, we realized one thing right away: It wouldn't be running Windows. The least-expensive version of Windows you can buy new, Windows XP Home Edition, costs $89.99 for an OEM license on Newegg.com. (Our real ideal for media-playback tasks would be Vista Home Premium, an additional $10.) On our budget, the leftover cash wouldn't buy the parts for a functional Windows PC.
