Granada's takeover of hotel operator Forte earlier this year has encouraged a new method of hotel construction that could leave traditional building contractors fighting for scraps in the booming hotel market. In its defence against Granada's hostile takeover bid, Forte said it could prefabricate its three- and four-star hotels to reduce build costs significantly. Even though Forte lost its battle and is now owned by Granada, its original boast has been put to the test. Modular building methods, which have come to dominate the budget end of the hotel market over the past five years, have been used by Forte to construct a 30-bed extension to a three-star Posthouse hotel in Brentwood, Essex. And at pound;28 000 per bedroom, it has proved to be 20 cheaper than traditionally built extensions.
