Acute renal failure was induced in the rat by injection of glycerol or low doses of mercuric chloride. Appearances at urography varied with the severity of acute renal failure rather than the manner of its induction. An early nephrogram occurred in all animals, but only those least severely affected retained sufficient tubular function to produce a pyelogram. In animals showing the most severe renal failure, the nephrogram appeared to be restricted to the renal cortex. This appearance, which has not previously been described, is considered to be the result of tubular blockage. Mortality rate in animals receiving diatrizoate was significantly higher than in animals which received no contrast medium. The high doses of diatrizoate used in this study may have been nephrotoxic.
