Duccio di Buoninsegna was an important painter who lived in the XIII century AD, coeval of Cimabue, and operated mostly in Siena, and in other Italian cities. The most famous work is the "Madonna col Bambino e sei angioli" known as "Madonna Ruccellai", named from the chapel where it is located in Santa Maria Novella in Florence."The Majesty" is a magnificient work, and is a double-faced altarpiece, made between 1308-1311 for the Duo-mo of Siena. This altarpiece depicts the majesty of Christ and is divided into 26 parts. In 1771 it has been splittedin various parts, currently exhibited in different museums around the world. This predella, called "The Nativity" is exibited at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, USA. At the right bottom is painted a shepherd with a large multinodular goiter, a very common disease in the countryside population during the medieval period.
