A comparison of the external morphology of ‘scent plaques’ on the hind tibiae of oviparous aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae)

ABSTRACT.The structure of the scent plaques on the hind tibiae of oviparae of 200 aphid species as observed by light and/or scanning electron microscopy is described. Differences between subfamilies were found and the characteristics of the scent plaques of each subfamily are described. The differences are probably due to the way in which canals from pheromone‐secreting cells are channelled to the pores on the surface of the scent plaques.
