One hundred nineteen diatom taxa were found in 28 terrestrial moss samples collected on Edge Island (Svalbard) in the far north. Classification and ordination techniques were used to analyse the data. It was possible to distinguish six assemblages, which were characterized by some dominant taxa with different responses in relation to the moisture content of the moss habitats. Problems like the possible contamination by soil particles and changes in the moisture content of the mosses during the course of the growing season are briefly discussed.
