Postpartum thyroid dysfunction occurs within the first year after delivery and is caused by primary disorders of the thyroid, as well as by the diseases of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) and postpartum Graves' disease, both primary conditions, are the most common causes of postpartum thyroid dysfunction.1The secondary forms of postpartum thyroid dysfunction, postpartum pituitary infarction, and lymphocytic hypophysitis are very rare(Table 1).TABLE 1.
