Wireless distribution subscriber services using K/Ka bands have commenced in Japan, paving the way to the use of millimeter-waves for broadband communications. This year has also seen establishment of technical standards for two kinds of 60-GHz indoor wireless systems, thus accelerating possible deployment of millimeter-wave communication systems. Meanwhile, the stratospheric platform, being developed under a national project, is expected in near future to supplement terrestrial wireless systems. This paper reports on the trends in millimeter-wave communication systems along with the key technologies to support them. Emphasis is placed on antenna-circuit integration and high-speed devices from a viewpoint to improve system performance.
