This Danish review (Meat Sci. 125 37-45) explores the opportunities for, and barriers against, market driven pig welfare in Europe. It finds that consumers generally rank animal welfare as important but it is ranked low relative to other societal problems/issues. It also finds that consumers have a wide range of concerns about pig welfare and that these focus on naturalness. Consumers see pig welfare as an important indicator quality. Finally, consumers consider the responsibility for pig welfare rests with several stakeholders and especially farmers, government and consumers. This review also emphasizes that pig welfare needs to be permanently on the political/societal agenda if it is to be viewed important by consumers and if they are to assume some sort of responsibility for it.
