Erosion-corrosion is a common problem in fluidized bed boilers. Recently, in a power plant using advanced bubbling fluidized bed combustors containing sand, carbon steel evaporator coils were severely damaged by erosion-corrosion. Microstructural examinations showed loss of carbon at certain places, including those near the leak/puncture regions at the prevailing bed temperature of 850℃. This article investigates the evaporator coil failure characteristics and suggests solutions.
