Summary.Clostridium sporogenes, grown under controlled culture conditions in a complex medium, starts to produce volatile acids at the end of the logarithmic growth phase when sporulation begins. Since, however, the amount and type of acids depend on the nature of the medium used, it is doubtful whether the volatile acid pattern can be used for identification and classification of proteolyticClostridiawithout controlling culture conditions.
