The dynamic instability of laminated composite circular cylindrical shells subjected to periodic load is studied using a C degrees shear flexible two-noded axisymmetric shell element. The formulation includes the effects of inplane and rotary terms. The boundaries of the principal instability regions are conveniently represented in the non-dimensional excitation frequency-non-dimensional load amplitude plane. The effects of various parameters such as ply-angle, thickness, aspect-ratio, axial and circumferential wave numbers on dynamic stability are brought out. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
